Government slashes regeneration cash for Gloucestershire

Government slashes regeneration cash for Gloucestershire

In the middle of the worst recession in decades, the Government’s Regional Development Agency has announced sweeping cuts to regeneration funding for Gloucestershire.  Regeneration projects in Cinderford and Newent in the Forest of Dean have been cancelled, and the budget for the regeneration of Gloucester has been more than halved, from £21m to £10m.  Plans to support new businesses across Gloucestershire have also been scrapped.

Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, County Councillor for Newent, commented:

“After the disastrous election results yesterday, it looks like today is a good day to bury bad news for the Government.  To be cutting money for regeneration during a recession is completely short-sighted.  Gordon Brown claimed he wants to sort out the economic crisis – but his Government’s agencies are cutting money to fight the recession.”

Cllr Paul James, Leader of Gloucester City Council, commented:

“We are disappointed that funding for Gloucester has been cut and this will inevitably impact on aspects of the regeneration programme.  We’ve put a strong case for continued investment in the city and had we not done so, I fear the cuts could have been much worse.  Despite this setback, I am confident we will maintain the momentum behind Gloucester’s regeneration.”
